Jean Marie of My Favorite Soap: October's Feature Artist

Who are you, where are you from, and what do you do?

I’m Jean Marie. I’m a mother and a daughter. I live and work in Garden Home in SW Portland. I spent most of my childhood in Cupertino, Santa Cruz, Eagle Point, Guadalajara, Oahu, and Vienna. I’ve also lived in New Orleans, Oakland, La Honda, New York, and Salzburg. I used to be a Crime Lab Photographer. Now I make handmade soap, candles, bath soak, lip balm, body wash, and lotion.

Why do you do what you do?

I have always loved to cook and making soap is very similar. I make all my own recipes and I experiment with new scents and ingredients all the time. I read everything I could about soap making, made many batches, and fell in love with making soap so I decided to start my own business. My family has been incredibly supportive of m, and they are absolutely wonderful. Thank you to: Bammie, Papa, Nola Peach, and Shawn. I love you all very much.

What themes do you pursue?

I have travelled a lot in my life and some of the fragrances which I create reflect places. The Portland

fragrance is one of my favorites. Summertime at the beach in Santa Cruz comes through in the Santa Cruz soap. Olympia, Rogue, Multnomah Village, Mardi Gras, Vienna, Kauai, Sedona, and Columbia, are other fragrances that I have made to capture memories of those places. Scent is a very powerful sense. It can evoke memories many years later.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

I would love to be able to breathe underwater.

Actually, I already have a super power. My hair grows incredibly fast. Every 3 years I cut it and donate the hair to make wigs for cancer patients.
